July 25, 2013, Edmonton – What police are calling a catastrophic collision has killed an 18-year-old man in Edmonton and left another man facing charges.
The crash happened Wednesday night in the city's northwest as the victim was making a turn in a Volkswagon Passat and collided with what witnesses say was a speeding Dodge Avenger.
Police say the impact ripped the first vehicle in half and touched off a fire in the second one.
The driver of the Passat died in hospital while a 27-year-old man in the Avenger allegedly ran from the scene until witnesses caught and held him for police.
He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Derrick O'Connor is facing charges that include criminal hit and run causing death, and police say other charges are pending.
