July 25, 2012, Niagara Falls, Ont. – A youth organization in Niagara Falls, Ont., says an 18-year-old man who plunged to his death Tuesday in the Niagara Gorge had been staying in one of its residences.

The Boys and Girls Club says the man lived there on and off since last year with no incidents of violence and was last seen leaving the home shortly after 5 p.m.

Authorities say a police officer started chasing the man sometime after then and both went over a retaining wall.

The province's police watchdog says the man died of injuries from the fall.

The officer broke his leg and was airlifted to hospital in Hamilton, Ont.

The Special Investigations Unit is looking into the incident and says it won't discuss what happened until the probe is complete.

It says relatives have asked that the man's name not be released to the public.

Firefighters pulled both from the gorge around 9 p.m. after reportedly rappelling down the steep embankment.
