Mounties say the 42-year-old man was working around a hole at a sewage lift station just outside the town when he slipped on ice and fell backwards down the hole.

A firefighter was rigged to a harness and he carried the man to the surface about 45 minutes later.

The worker was taken by ambulance to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.

Officials from the Department of Labour are assisting with the investigation into what occurred.
