Manitoba barn fire kills 2,000 pigs
March, 26, 2015, Kola, Man. - The provincial fire commissioner's office is investigating a blaze in western Manitoba this week that killed about 1,500 hogs and 700 piglets.
The fire in a barn owned by pork producer HyLife happened late Tuesday night in Kola, near the Saskatchewan boundary.
Firefighters from three communities fought the blaze.
Brad Yochim, chief of the Wallace District Fire Department, says crews were at the scene until 4:00 a.m. Wednesday, but the barn was a complete loss.
There is no word of anyone being hurt while fighting the fire.
HyLife's website states that the company produces 1.4 million hogs a year in Canada and the U.S., and ships its products around the world.
