Mississauga firefighters still recovering after industrial blaze

April 24, 2014, Mississauga, Ont. – A firefighter remains in hospital in serious but stable condition after a massive industrial fire in Mississauga, Ont.

He was one of four injured while fighting the blaze Wednesday at a warehouse near Pearson International Airport, the cause of which is still not known.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what exactly was in the building, but they have been told there were butane tanks, bug spray cans, pesticides and printer toner inside.

One explosion caused a wall to collapse, injuring three firefighters – one of whom was rushed to a downtown Toronto hospital in critical condition but was later upgraded to serious.

Two of the other firefighters were taken to hospital for treatment of broken bones while the fourth was treated for smoke inhalation.

Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion said Wednesday that firefighters had no idea what they were up against when they arrived at the scene because the building was vacant the last time it was inspected.

"We don't know of any occupancy permit that was granted by the city for the building to be occupied with the type of material," McCallion said.

"The explosions caused the building to collapse and therefore seriously injured our firefighters," she said.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's office is investigating.
