Up to 70 people could be out of work as a result of Friday night's fire at Prairie Mushrooms in
Sherwood Park, which employs 120 people.

The fire is also expected to hurt mushroom supplies in Alberta.

About 60 firefighters from Strathcona County, Fort Saskatchewan and Edmonton battled the blaze for about six hours.

The plant contained mushroom compost, which contributed to the rapid spread of fire.

It is expected to smoulder for weeks.

The facility produced more than 45,000 kilograms of mushrooms every week, supplying groceries in Edmonton, Calgary, northern Alberta and some parts of British Columbia.

Prairie Mushrooms produced white, brown, oyster and portabella mushrooms sold fresh or dried.
