The Moncton Fire Department says it received word of the fire at a two-unit home on Lutz Street around 8 p.m.

Deputy chief Don McCabe says crews arrived to find flames erupting from a natural gas line on the side of the building.

He says more than 30 people were evacuated from the area as crews waited for the gas line to be shut off before fighting the fire from the outside.

McCabe says it then took less than an hour to contain the fire but that the house has likely been destroyed.

He says everyone inside at the time was able to escape unhurt.
