Province to improve firefighter burial benefits

Fredericton - The New Brunswick government says it is planning to improve burial and related-expenses benefits for families of eligible firefighters and former firefighters.

Francine Landry, the minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour, said Wednesday when the Firefighters Compensation Act was enacted, the intent was that benefits would mirror those under the Workers' Compensation Act.

She said when burial and related expenses under the Workers' Compensation Act were increased in 2012, the Firefighters' Compensation Act was overlooked.

The proposed amendments will be made retroactive to Dec. 20, 2012.

The province says those affected during that period will receive the increased retroactive benefits automatically.
