July 5, 2013, St. John's – People in Newfoundland are being told to be cautious around campfires this weekend as the island experiences dry conditions and bouts of hot weather.

The province's Natural Resources Department says the forest fire index is rising in many areas.

In Labrador, the department has implemented a ban on outdoor fires for forest land in all regions.

Firefighters in western Labrador have been battling forest fires for nearly two weeks that at one point prompted a voluntary evacuation order for the town of Wabush, though that has since lifted.

A section of the Trans-Labrador Highway has also been closed as a result of the forest fires.
