The city has recorded four fire deaths so far this year — the first in more than two years.

The latest fatalities occurred when two people died in a Dec. 23 apartment blaze that was sparked by improper use of electrical cords.

The four fire deaths mark the highest number in the Saskatchewan capital since five people died in 2002.

Regina has averaged one fire-related death each year for the past 10 years.
