Witness Kareem Mock says the fire started in a shed behind one of the homes and he heard two bangs, one after another that quickly set the two houses alight.
Mock and a neighbour broke into one of the homes and warned residents, including some who were apparently showering, to evacuate.
No one appears to have been injured and most of the damage was limited to one home.
