All new Ontario condos and apartments higher than three storeys must be outfitted with sprinkler systems as of spring 2010.

Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Jim Watson announced the regulatory changes to the Building Code today.

The changes come following public consultations and will take effect
April 1, 2010.

Watson says the changes bring Ontario in line with other jurisdictions across Canada and the United States.

Firefighters across the province have been pressing the government to make the changes.

The Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs has suggested some 90 fire fatalities in the last year could have been prevented by sprinklers.
