CALGARY –
Canadian Oil Sands Trust (TSX:COS.UN) says an overnight fire affecting
equipment at the Syncrude oilsands project near Fort McMurray, Alta.,
has disrupted operations there.
The energy trust – one of the
main partners in the Syncrude consortium – says the fire at one of the
project's three cokers has been put out and the cause is under
investigation.
No injuries were reported.
Cokers are
massive vessels where bitumen that has been extracted from the oilsands
is heated as part of the process for turning the tarry substance into
crude oil.
Canadian Oil Sands says the fire burned in the flue
gas section at Coker 8-3 beginning late Tuesday until early Wednesday
morning. The same coker has had a series of equipment failures in the
past year.
