Dec. 5, 2013, Lindsay, Ont. – Authorities are looking for a woman who walked into a central Ontario police station with a container labelled "85 per cent uranium."

Kawartha Lakes Police say the woman was asking for advice on how to dispose of a possible hazardous substance, and that the container had an orange powder inside it.

Police say it's believed the substance came from a Kirkland Lake-area mine where the woman's grandfather worked and that the container had been sitting in a barn for about 40 years.

Officials with the police and fire department consulted with the Ministry of the Environment's spills reporting centre and a company that specializes in hazardous waste before advising the woman on how to properly dispose of the material.

But police say the woman then left the station without leaving any contact information and they'd like her to get in touch with them so they can follow up.

Officials say the substance does not pose a threat to public safety but they would like to ensure that it is properly disposed of.
