Power plant fire cuts electricity in Nunavut
Pangnirtung, Nunavut - Officials have been flying emergency generators to a Nunavut hamlet after a fire disabled the community's power plant.
The Hamlet of Pangnirtung declared a local state of emergency after Thursday's fire.
A news release from the Nunavut Emergency Management agency says the Qulliq Energy Corporation has been trying to rotate power to customers every four hours with backup generators.
The temperature in the Baffin Island community on Friday was -10C.
The news release says warming shelters have been set up at schools and 14 patients have been transported to Iqaluit for continuing care.
It says additional emergency power generators are being flown in from the Northwest Territories to help relieve the strain on the utility's emergency generators.
The release says fire investigators will look at the power plant in the coming days to determine the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.
