Prince Edward Island welcomes new fire marshal

Aug. 2, 2011, Charlottetown – Dave Rossiter has been appointed fire marshal for the province of Prince Edward Island, assuming duties on Aug. 1.

Rossiter has more than 25 years experience with the Island fire service,
including serving as chief of the St. Peter’s Fire Department,
vice-president of the Maritime Fire Chiefs Association, provincial
director to the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC), 12 years
with the Provincial Fire Marshal’s Office, and more than two years as
deputy fire marshal. He replaces David Blacquiere who served in the role
for 20 years.

“Dave Rossiter brings an excellent mix of training, experience and leadership skills to the role of fire marshal,” says Doug Currie, minister of justice and public safety. “He has consistently demonstrated his commitment to enhancing fire safety measures for firefighters, citizens and visitors throughout our province.”

Rossiter holds Chief Fire Officer designation (CFO) from the CAFC and graduate status (GIFireE) with the Institution of Fire Engineers. He is certified as a Fire and Explosives Investigator (CFEI) with the National Association of Fire Investigators.

As fire marshal, Rossiter will assume the role of co-chair of the Prince Edward Island Fire Services Advisory Committee, along with Tim Jenkins, president of the PEI Firefighters Association.

“Dave is well respected by his national colleagues, and understands the needs of our province,” said Currie. “I am confident he will serve Islanders well in this new role.”

The Fire Marshal’s Office administers the Fire Prevention Act and Regulations as well as the National Fire Safety Codes and Standards (NFPA). In addition to investigating cause and origin of fires, and conducting plans review and fire prevention inspections, the Fire Marshal is responsible to provide information, education, and leadership to enhance protection for all citizens from the devastation of fire and all related hazards.
