Quebec honours Lac-Megantic first responders

Dec. 9, 2013, Lac-Megantic, Que. - Quebec has honoured the first responders to July's train disaster in Lac-Megantic.

Premier Pauline Marois was among those who gathered in the community yesterday to pay tribute to paramedics, police and volunteers.

The ceremony was held at the local high school, which served as a shelter for those displaced following the disaster.

Lac-Megantic Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche was the first to be honoured with a medal.

Following the July 6th accident, firefighters came from across the province and even neighbouring Maine to help out.

Forty-seven people were killed after a runaway train carrying crude oil derailed and exploded near the centre of Lac-Megantic.

Much of the downtown core of the town was levelled by the explosion and fire.
