Rescuers inch closer to Elliot Lake victims

June 27, 2012, Elliot Lake, Ont. - An all-night rescue operation removed large pieces of debris from the Algo Centre Mall but it is still not clear whether there are any survivors in the rubble, rescue workers said this morning.
“At this point, it is too early to say that,” Dan Hefkey, Ontario’s commissioner for community safety, told a 6 a.m. briefing.
Hefkey said the cranes managed to move an escalator and flight of stairs that had been a big hindrance in the search and rescue. “It was hanging there by its side,” he said. “They pulled it toward them, toward the exit.” The Toronto Star reports.
