Nov. 15, 2012, Toronto – The Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC) has named Richard Boyes as its new executive director, just four months after Boyes was hired as the association’s chief operating officer.

Boyes starts in the new position Jan. 1 and replaces Barry Malmsten, who announced in early October that he will retire at the end of November. Boyes was OAFC president from 2007 until 2011.

OAFC president Kevin Foster said in an e-mail to members Friday afternoon that Boyes’s varied experience makes him well suited to the executive director role.

Boyes was the fire chief in Oakville, Ont., from 2005 until 2011, in Sarnia, Ont., from 1997 through 2005 and, before that, in Allison, Ont., a volunteer department.

“Richard is very familiar with the operation, tasks and challenges of the OAFC having served on the board for many years,” Foster said.

“Also he has been chief operations officer at the OAFC since July of this year and has been working very closely with the executive director, president and board on many different projects.”

There’s no word yet on the hiring of a new chief operations officer. The issue is expected to be discussed at next week’s mid-term meeting.
