Rooming house owner sentenced for fatal fire

Dec. 2, 2014, Toronto - The owner of a Toronto rooming house that went up in flames more than three years ago, killing one resident, has been handed a three-year prison sentence.

Jasvir Singh was found guilty of criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm and four counts of criminal mischief.

He was also ordered to pay $26,100 in restitution in connection with the March 2011 fire in the city's northwest end.

Ontario Fire Code charges related to the case are still in the provincial court system.

Several tenants were living in the house at the time of the fire, which was linked to the use of a hotplate being used by one of them.

That man, Karnail Singh Dhaliwal, died in the fire.
