Salka at Firefighters Speak Up
Batallion Chief John Salka (fourth from left), author of First In, Last Out – Leadership Lessons from the New York Fire Department, was the guest speaker at the Firefighters Speak Up education seminar in Ilderton, Ont., on Saturday, and Clinton, Ont., on Sunday. Firefighters Speak Up, sponsored by Fire Fighting in Canada and Firehall.com, promotes firefighter safety by bringing in fire-service experts to speak to firefighters in Middlesex and Huron counties. Pictured with Salka are (left) Huron firefighter Mike Read, Capt. Jeff Musser and Chief Steve Cooke, FFIC editor Laura King, Middlesex district chiefs Blair Harvey and Launie Fletcher, and Carlin Riley, assistant platoon chief in Kitchener, Ont. Salka’s message about the response to the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center – including many personal anecdotes – and the lessons learned was informative, emotional and riveting.
