About 7,000 hogs perished after a fire broke out at a plant south of Steinbach, Man., owed by Maple Leaf.

A fire about a month ago at a Hytek plant nearby destroyed a hog operation and killed 5,200 hogs.

Al Nadeau, the area's fire chief, says they were called out to the latest fire around 3:30 a.m.

But he says, by the time crews got there, the barn was fully engulfed in flames.

Large, thick plumes of smoke from the fire could be seen rising into the air as fire crews worked to extinguish the burning hog barn.
