Feb. 5, 2014, Trenton, Ont. – Police say several people are injured after a multi-vehicle pileup on Highway 401 just east of Trenton, Ont.

OPP say about 25 tractor trailers and 10 smaller vehicles were involved in the string of collisions (west of Saint Hilaire Road) at about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The collisions have forced the closure of the highway's westbound lanes in the area.

There are no immediate details on the injuries but officials say firefighters have been tending to the injured until they can be taken to hospital by ambulance.

Fire Chief John Whelan describes the scene as carnage.

The pileup comes as many roads in eastern and southern Ontario are covered in snow from a substantial snowstorm.
