Sept. 4, 2013, St. John's, N.L. – A section of downtown St. John's, N.L., was blocked to traffic today as firefighters doused a blaze that engulfed three attached buildings.
A health food store, an empty storefront and at least two apartment units were affected as the empty buildings burned.
Fire trucks lined a section of Duckworth Street above the popular George Street bar district.
Jerry Peach, deputy chief of the St. John's Fire Department, said no injuries had been reported.
A small crowd gathered to watch as firefighters used a crane to hose flames that jumped from the burning rooftop.
Some people working at businesses and living in the immediate area around the fire left nearby buildings when thick smoked filled the air, although no buildings were ordered evacuated by emergency officials.
