Fire officials say a small ammonia leak has been detected at the Bonduelle plant in the town of Tecumseh, after the fire broke out overnight.

The town has issued an evacuation notice for residents living within 1.5 kilometres of the facility while others in the area are being asked to stay sheltered and in place, and to keep their windows closed.

About 1,300 homes are in the affected area (bounded by Manning Road, Lesperance Road, St. Thomas Road and County Road 22).

Mayor Gary McNamara says residents are being offered shelter at the town's arena and a nearby school. There are no immediate reports of injuries.

The building, formerly a Green Giant plant, was purchased by Bonduelle in 2007.
