Mitchell Boutilier and Chris Marsh say they saw smoke coming out of the window of their friend's home in North Sydney on Monday.
Marsh went to get help, while Boutilier started kicking on the door.
The 15-year-old says he'd almost succeeded in forcing the door open when his friend Lloyd Bona emerged from the house.
The fire department arrived just as Bona stumbled out of the house.
The fire damaged the home's oven and the flooring in the kitchen but there were no serious injuries.
North Sydney Fire Chief Lloyd MacIntosh praised the boys for their actions, saying they set a good example for others by quickly seeking help.
