May 23, 2023, Ayr, Ont. – The Township of North Dumfries is mourning the passing of former Ayr Fire Chief Jim Schmidt.

Schmidt was a volunteer firefighter for the Township of North Dumfries for 50 years, serving as its fire chief for 18 years. He was a businessman and community leader.

Flags at all township properties and facilities have been lowered to half mast in his honour. Mayor Sue Foxton and the members of township council have extended their condolences to his family.

“I feel a sense of honour to have known an individual who embraced and helped to create the fabric of this community of Ayr. Some individuals are just made to do, made to lead and we will always acknowledge their leadership. They have spent their lifetime serving our community, serving us and yet I don’t think they ever thought of it as service but rather as living community life to the fullest,” Foxton said. “This community, is blessed to have had such a “doer” and Jim Schmidt will live on in the life of this community, a ground breaker who taught us by example and taught us well.”
