The Canadian Red Cross says volunteers are providing food and shelter to six adults and five children who escaped the fire unhurt.

Red Cross spokesman Dan Bedell says the fire started around 2:30 Sunday morning and eventually destroyed three buildings (at 47 to 51 Prince Edward St.)

He says the buildings contained several apartments and the retailer Ben’s Clothing.

Bedell says people were also evacuated from a nearby apartment building and sheltered in city buses and at a mall in the area.
