Firefighters in Woolwich Township, Ont., were getting ready for their Monday night practice – a water shuttle involving St Jacobs, Conestogo, and Floradale. At about 6:45 p.m., Kitchener dispatch toned out Conestogo for a barn fire. Smoke was visible from the hall, and a full turn out from St. Jacobs (pumper tanker rescue) and Floradales 2,500 gallon tanker was requested. Conestogo responded with its pumper, tanker, and rescue and, on arrival, reported a fully involved barn with exposures. Lines were pulled to protect cattle at the rear and to try to save the milk house. Water was shuttled from a hydrant in Elmira, about four kilometers from the scene. The fire started in the hay mow. This was the second barn fire in 14 years on this property. A high hoe was brought in to pull the barn apart at 10:30 p.m. A Conestogo crew remained on the scene all night. A number of dairy cattle and pigs perished in the fire. Photos by Gary Dinkel.
