Young boy dies after falling into river

Dec. 22, 2010, Ottawa – An Ottawa family is in mourning after their nine-year-old son died after falling into the Rideau River.

Fire officials say the boy and a friend were playing near the river when he slipped and fell into the icy water yesterday afternoon.

Nearly two dozen firefighters, police and paramedics tried to find the boy.

A firefighter spotted him after 15 minutes floating 800 metres downstream at Strathcona Park but the boy didn't have a pulse.

He was pronounced dead at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
