Const. Diana Cole says multiple people perished and several more are missing, but wouldn't provide any specific numbers.

The aboriginal news outlet APTN reported, however, that nine people have died, including three children. APTN cited community members who said the victims were all members of the same family.

Cole says the fire broke out shortly before midnight on Tuesday in the remote community near the Manitoba-Ontario border that's been plagued by suicides.

She says the blaze took place at a single home on the reserve. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
