Greenview Fire Rescue Services launches green light pilot program

Oct. 18, 2022, Greenview, Alta. – On Nov. 1, 2022, Greenview Fire Rescues Services (GFRS) will launch the Volunteer Firefighter Green Light program, which will aim to enhance public safety and awareness.

The green light program will help to identify Greenview firefighters who are in the process of either mustering to the station for an emergency or responding directly to an emergency incident in their personal vehicle.

The use of a flashing green light will provide motorists and pedestrians with a visual notification that there is an emergency taking place and, as a courtesy, to yield if safe to do so.

Reeve Tyler Olsen notes, “Drivers are familiar with flashing red lights on emergency vehicles used when attending emergency calls, but flashing green lights is not as common, so educating the public is essential for this program to work.”

This program is being piloted by all three Greenview Fire Rescue Stations, with each station utilizing two of the green lights. At the end of 2022, GFRS will complete a comprehensive review of the program to assess the results of the project and ultimately reduce response times while keeping responding firefighters and the travelling public safe.
