Nov. 5, 2013, Alberton, P.E.I. – The fire marshal in Prince Edward Island says an overheated bearing in an escalator caused the fire that burned a dairy barn killing 150 animals last week.

The fire at Kent and Diane Rennie's dairy operation in the community of Dock, claimed about 60 milk cows as well as dry cows and young cattle.

Kent Rennie and some farm workers were in the loft packing straw when the fire broke out near the escalator motor on Friday.

Dianne Rennie said the farm crew fought the fire with fire extinguishers and thought they had it out.

When it reignited, they had to escape from the loft quickly and call 911.

The loss is insured.
