Port Stanley, Ont., puts $17M towards storm surge protection measures

Port Stanley in Southern Ontario is getting a federal Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF) boost for its $17-million project to better protect its shorelines from storm surges.

The Canadian government is investing $6.8 million in the project through DMAF, Infrastructure Canada announced this week.

The project includes enhancements to the existing dune protection system, construction of a new harbour entrance breakwater, raising the crest of an existing breakwater, and upgrading the community’s storm water management system.

“Lake Erie & Kettle Creek are integral to the Municipality of Central Elgin. Today’s announcement supports the completion of infrastructure that will benefit the residents, businesses and visitors going forward. We look forward to this and further partnerships with the Government of Canada in the future,” Municipality of Central Elgin Mayor Andrew Sloan said in a government news release.
