April 2, 2013, Saskatoon – The search for a 60-year-old man reported missing in the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon has been called off.
Assistant fire chief Bill Coffin says it was a difficult decision to make.
But safety concerns and technical problems made it impossible to continue.
Coffin says the cold was freezing up rigs and the swift current made it too dangerous to send divers to look under the river ice.
A witness reported seeing a man enter the water on Saturday.
Coffin says search crews would have continued if they had any evidence to work with.
"He could be under the ice. He could be further downstream. We're just not sure now."
