June 10, 2024, Thunder Bay, Ont. — Thunder Bay Fire Rescue has removed the interim tag from their new Fire Chief David Paxton, who had been filling the role since February.

Paxton has been a firefighter since 1998 and was promoted to the role of deputy fire chief in 2012. He then moved into the acting fire chief role following the retirement of Chief Greg Hankkio.

Paxton was selected after a “rigorous and competitive selection process that drew interest from many highly qualified candidates across the country,” city officials said in a statement reported by TBnewswatch.com.

He will lead a staff of more than 200 operating across eight fire stations while also contributing to community emergency planning efforts and training, TBnewswatch.com said.
