May 1, 2024, Alberta — Alberta’s government increased the budget of the Community Fireguard Program, a tool communities can employ to help educate residents and lower the risk of large wildfires, to $19 million, a $14 million increase from 2023.
This increase is aimed at supporting communities in the education of residents and lower the risk of large wildfires in response to the unprecedented number of fires in 2023.
In addition, the budget includes funding for two additional airtanker groups and two new night vision-equipped helicopters, which will increase the effectiveness of Alberta Wildfire’s initial attack, sustained action and suppression efforts, reports a provincial press release.
These tools will also enhance the province’s night operations, a program piloted during the 2023 wildfire season, allowing for nighttime heli-tanking and improved suppression efforts stemming from the lower temperatures and higher humidity.
