Dec. 27, 2013, Cape Breton, N.S. – A 50-year-old Cape Breton man suffered minor injuries after slipping on ice and falling down a cliff.

The Howie Centre resident and a friend were exploring the area in Glace Bay for its scenery on Thursday when the man lost his footing.

Emergency responders were called to the cliff at the bottom of Eleventh Street.

Two firefighters rappelled down the cliff with a basket to rescue the man, while about 25 people, including firefighters, police, paramedics and civilians, created a pulley system to lift the man from the shoreline.

Sgt. Mike Byrne of the Cape Breton Regional Police says police considered using a boat to rescue the man, but decided it would take longer as the launch was snow covered.

It's estimated the man fell nearly 20 metres to the shoreline.
