Deadly risk awaits anyone on winter ice: fire chief

Jan. 6, 2011, St. Catharines, Ont. - It might be cold and the ice could appear safe on the surface, but venture onto local lakes or ponds at this time of year and you're skating on thin ice. "Be very careful, I can't stress that enough. Once you break through, it's almost impossible to get out," said St. Catharines fire Chief Mark Mehlenbacher. The St. Catharines Standard reports.
