Gerard Kay says the railway needs to do more preventative work in high-risk areas.
A series of grass fires Wednesday afternoon has the fire department concerned once again about trains passing through the area north of Regina.
Three separate grass fire calls were received, the largest burning over a kilometre along CP Rail train tracks.
Two other smaller fires were reported near Highway 6 where the train tracks cross the road.
Kay stressed the department had not yet conclusively determined the fires were caused by passing trains.
"We have investigators going up to those areas to look at the fire zones,'' he said. "It's very suspicious and that's a notorious area for fires.
