Fires in two B.C. regions force families from their homes

April 21, 2014, Vancouver – Two homes in separate regions of British Columbia have been gutted by early morning fires, but no one has been hurt.

Both fires broke out at around 6 a.m. on Monday, one in Coquitlam in Metro Vancouver and the other in the southern Okanagan community of Oliver.

In the Coquitlam blaze, flames in the garage jumped to the home, while the Oliver fire began in the house and spread to an adjoining building damaging businesses including the office of Liberal MLA Linda Larson.

Causes of both fires are under investigation, but a family of four in Coquitlam and a family of five in Oliver escaped unharmed.

Firefighters also handled a blaze in the wall of a two-storey office building in downtown Vancouver early Monday morning.

The building was under renovation and suffered smoke damage when the flames spread up the small space from the main floor to the second floor before being doused.
