The Canadian Red Cross says the fire department was able to contain most of the damage to three apartments, only one of which was occupied.

But smoke throughout the building and the loss of electrical service meant it had to be evacuated as a precaution.

The Red Cross arranged for overnight accommodation in a motel for 14 people who had nowhere else to go.

The Red Cross says it will assess the needs of the evacuees, but it expects most residents will return to the building after power is restored.
