June 24, 2013, Labrador City, N.L. – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says a forest fire burning in western Labrador isn't a threat to any nearby communities.

A portion of the Trans Labrador Highway has been closed to all traffic as police, firefighters and the province's Department of Natural Resources monitor the blaze, which has been burning in the woods near Labrador City since Sunday.

Police say windy conditions today pushed the fire and smoke closer to the highway near the town.

Initially some commercial traffic was permitted on the highway, but spokeswoman Const. Talia Murphy says the route has since been closed to all drivers in the area as a precaution while water bombers battle the fire.

Owners of cabins in the surrounding area are being asked to be safe and stay away.

Police also say residents who wish to leave the area as a precaution are being asked to move toward the Ashuanipi River, east of Labrador City.
