March 18, 2024, Ontario — The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) and the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC) have forged a strategic partnership to bolster farm safety across Ontario. Together, they plan to pool resources and champion fire safety and prevention initiatives within the agricultural community.

Drew Spoelstra, president of the OFA, emphasized the critical importance of emergency preparedness and risk mitigation. He expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting the shared commitment to raising awareness about farm fire risks. Spoelstra stressed the preventable nature of farm fires and the collective responsibility to safeguard lives, livestock, and property.

Rob Grimwood, deputy chief of Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services and president of OAFC, echoed Spoelstra’s sentiments. Grimwood emphasized the urgency of prioritizing fire prevention, especially given the heightened risks of winter conditions. He stressed the need for farmers to implement simple yet effective measures to minimize on-farm fire hazards.

Identifying common culprits such as dust accumulation, faulty electrical systems, and inadequate heating equipment, Grimwood outlined practical steps farmers can take to mitigate risks. These include upgrading electrical infrastructure, regular cleaning to remove dust and cobwebs, and utilizing thermal imaging technology to identify potential hotspots.

Highlighting the severity of the issue, recent statistics from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office revealed 152 barn fires in 2021, causing over $54 million in damages. In response, the OFA plans to collaborate with the OAFC to engage directly with farmers at key agricultural events across the province to disseminate vital information and promote best practices in farm safety.

The OFA represents 38,000 farm families and is a staunch advocate for Ontario’s agricultural sector. Through its multifaceted approach encompassing government relations, policy advocacy, and community engagement, the OFA remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing the interests of Ontario farmers.

Meanwhile, the OAFC serves as the unified voice of the province’s fire service, comprising 437 fire departments. With a mission to provide leadership and support, the OAFC is dedicated to enhancing public and firefighter safety through advocacy and service delivery.

By joining forces, the OFA and OAFC aim to foster a culture of safety and resilience within Ontario’s vibrant farming community, ensuring a sustainable and secure future for future generations.
