August 21, 2012, West Point, P.E.I. – Volunteer firefighters on Prince Edward Island will begin receiving compensation for the hours they put in.

The province's Finance Minister Wes Sheridan announced Monday that volunteer firefighters with more than 200 hours a year will be eligible to receive a refundable tax credit of $500.

Sheridan says the money is a small gesture to show the government's appreciation for their work.

He says more than 1,000 volunteers will be affected by the change.

Sheridan says the move will also help recruit new volunteers.
