The RCMP say an officer was on a routine patrol in downtown Cranbrook when he spotted smoke pouring out of the building.

Other officers called to the scene were driven back by the flames but they made enough noise to wake up two people inside who fled to the roof of an adjacent building where they were rescued by fire crews.

Four businesses were damaged in the fire, but no one was hurt.

The fire occurred in an older section of town that includes antique and used furniture stores.
