Rain aids crews battling forest fires

The Caddy Lake fire, where Ontario crews are leading the fight, is holding at 58 square kilometres while the Beresford Lake fire, which is primarily in Ontario but being handled by Manitoba firefighters, is holding at 730 square kilometres.
Twenty firefighters from Nova Scotia were expected to arrive Friday to help with the Beresford blaze.
Officials said Thursday that an unoccupied trapper’s cabin was destroyed at North Cross Lake and the Whiteshell Cottagers Association reported on social media that a historic train station at Winnitoba was lost.
Evacuation orders are still in effect for Wallace Lake, which affects 61 cottages and one lodge, as well as the Beresford cottage subdivision in the Nopiming Provincial Park.
Burning permits are cancelled for eastern Manitoba, and no new permits will be issued.
However, conditions have improved enough to lift burning permit and travel restrictions for central and western Manitoba.
