Six-alarm blaze leaves 1200 homeless

A Toronto firefighter observes an involved apartment fire from an adjacent
balcony to advise of the progress of crews hitting the fire with water from the
interior. Toronto Fire responded to an apartment fire at around 5 p.m. Friday. The
blaze escalated to a sixth alarm after two maydays were called for missing
firefighters due to thick smoke spreading through the hallways. The
firefighters were rescued soon after. Toronto Fire Chief Bill Stewart said there were
