Jan. 12, 2024, Terrace, B.C. – The Terrace Fire Department has transitioned into a 24-hour shift pattern for a three year trial.

The change to the new shift pattern was designed to be cost-neutral and ensure there is no impact on the department’s budget, public safety, or the level of services provided to the community, the city said in a press release.

The new shift pattern will be one 24-hour shift, followed by a 24-hour break, then another 24-hour shift, and then a five-day rest period. The previous shift pattern was two 10-hour day shifts, followed by two 14-hour night shifts, culminating in a four-day rest period.

A dedicated steering committee is expected to monitor the new shift pattern and evaluate its effectiveness and impact on the department’s operations and personnel.
