Toronto fire leaves one dead, three others in critical condition

March 7, 2014, Toronto – One person is dead and three others are in critical condition following a residential fire overnight in Toronto.

Firefighters were called to the blaze just after 3 a.m. after smoke was seen coming from a building (on Dovercourt Road near Dupont).

The victims' genders have not been released, but Division Commander Dan MacIsaac says they were aged in their 20s to 40s.

"All four victims were found on the second floor. They were pulled out by firefighters," he said.

The fire is believed to have started in the living room and kitchen area of the second-floor residence.

MacIsaac said firefighters arrived to find the back of the second floor totally engulfed in flames and they had to battle through heavy black smoke.

He said the ground flood contained a vacant business.

There was a working smoke alarm on the first floor of the building, but it isn't known if there was one on the second floor.

Fifty-five fire-fighters were involved in battling the blaze at the height of the fire.

One firefighter was injured but remained on the scene.

The cause of the fire and the cost of the damage is not yet known.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's office is investigating.
